Winter is coming!
Be it Aussie Rules, soccer, either code of rugby, or even American gridiron; make sure you have your mouthguard ready for your choice of winter sport!
It is strongly recommended to wear a customised sports mouthguard when playing contact sports as they provide protection for your teeth and jaws. Mouthguards can achieve this by reducing the intensity and impact of force onto the teeth by firstly absorbing some of the force and secondly spreading any remaining force over a greater area of impact.
Recommendations by the Australian Dental Association
The ADA recommends wearing a sports mouthguard during training and on game day to protect the teeth and jaws. Dental injuries such as fractured jaws, broken, fractured or knocked-out teeth are notoriously hard and potentially expensive to treat. Often prevention is better than the cure. The ADA endorses wearing customised mouthguards as they are comfortable to wear, still easy to breathe and speak when worn, and stay securely in place. In contrast, a store bought boil and bite mouthguards are ill fitting, provide less protection and can make it hard to breathe and speak.
Below is a video from the ADA on why you need to wear a mouthguard during sport.
